Fencing & Gates
Fencing is often the first thing a garden needs after a bad winter. Closeboard, featheredge and panel styles all have their place, and the difference between a fence that copes and one that doesn't is usually what's holding it up.
Posts, not panels
Concrete or well-treated timber posts, set to the right depth in firm concrete, are what keep a fence upright through weather. Gravel boards keep panels off the damp ground.
Gates and access
Side gates, garden gates and wider access gates are hung square with appropriate ironmongery so they don't drop or drag. Gate width and swing direction are worth settling early.
What shapes a proposal
Every project is different, so anything you'd receive would be written after looking at your space. These are the factors that usually shape the options:
- Run length, height and the number of posts
- Style — closeboard, featheredge or panels
- Post type — timber or concrete
- Old fence removal, gates and boundary questions
